Award-winning, bestselling author Sami Abrams grew up hating to read. It wasn’t until her 30s that she found authors that captured her attention. Now, most evenings, you can find her engrossed in a Romantic Suspense. In her opinion, a crime and a little romance is the recipe for a great story.

She lives in Northern California, but she will always be a Kansas girl at heart. She has a love of sports, family, and travel. However, a cabin at Lake Tahoe writing her next story is definitely at the top of her list.

Thanks for joining us today, Sami. I’m looking forward to getting to know you better.

What themes or ideas do you find yourself returning to in your writing?

Oh, wow. I think the one thing that tends to make it into all of my books whether a heavy focus or as a small piece, is PSTD. A topic very close to my heart. Post Traumatic Stress is something I feel like isn’t talked about enough. We (as in the collective we) have stepped up and recognized it in our military, but many don’t understand that it can happen to anyone.

When you begin a new project, do you start with the characters, the plot, or the emotional core of the story?

For a pantser, the word plot is a dirty word. Even saying it gives me hives. Haha! As for starting a new project, I tend to come up with a concept. One small bit of a scene and build the entire story around that. For example, my novella Charlie ONE, I pictured the heroine Raven captured, tied up in a hut in the middle of the jungle, and being rescued. That’s what started that whole story. BlackKnight Security and Charlie Team evolved from that one image.

Are you more of a plotter, a pantser, or somewhere in between?

If I had my choice, I’m a total pantser. But with contracts, I do have to at least timeline a few things so that I can write a synopsis to send to my editor. I’ll admit, I’m not a fan of those pesky synopsis. My characters tend to have a mind of their own and take me down different paths. LOL!

Have any of your characters surprised you while you were writing them?

Only every day. Hahaha! The most memorable time was when one of my easy-going loveable characters got mad at God. The character’s reaction shocked me. But it was so organic and raw that I left it in the story. (And no, that story hasn’t been published yet. Sorry.) Fun fact: I wrote that scene at a writer’s conference while listening to worship music. It soooooo didn’t match the atmosphere. Hehe!

Was there a particular moment when you felt like, “Yes, I’m really an author”?

I’m ROTFL. Fourteen books into my career and I still don’t feel like an author. Imposter Syndrome is alive and well in the writing community. LOL!

Raven once watched over him from the shadows…Now he’ll stand between her and the darkness.
